How Short-Term Car Insurance Saved My Sister’s Wedding Memory

My sister was getting married to her fiancée in his hometown where they lived, which is a three-day drive from us. In order to cut down costs for gas and wear on vehicles, my parents and I decided to take their vehicle and take turns driving. This would allow us to rest enough and arrive on time for the rehearsal ceremony as I was working up to the last minute. My insurance cover does not cover me to drive other people’s vehicles with my current insurance policy, only my own automobile. We needed to find cover for three days only at a reasonable rate.

While looking online for short-term insurance options (available from here), I was pleased to learn that there were companies who specialized in issuing short-term policies on a daily basis for up to 28 days. The cover available was the same as policies that regular insurance companies carry but offered at a more competitive rate than the regular insurance companies could offer. We took out a ten-day policy to cover me with my parent’s vehicle.

My policy covered me for just about any bad incident that could happen out on the road, including theft and protection from uninsured motorists. I felt safe and confident knowing that I had cover in case anything happened while I was behind the wheel. As we headed out for the special wedding that was in store, my mother was already slightly weepy at the thought of her first-born daughter getting married. I consoled her and told her it would be a while until I tied the knot.

My father took the first turn at the wheel and we drove all day and stopped to rest at our designated inn for the night. We arrived at the inn and after settling into my room and having a hot shower, I felt refreshed and ready for dinner. I joined my parents in their room to decide what we wanted to do for dinner. I used my laptop to look up restaurants and we ordered take-out.

Because I was more familiar with my GPS Navigation system, I decided to go pick up our dinner. On the way to the restaurant, I was driving down a street where the cars were parallel parked when a driver pulled out and dented the rear panel of my parent’s car. The driver of the vehicle did not have any insurance and I had to call the police to the scene of the accident.

After the accident, the vehicle was still drivable so I resumed my mission to get dinner. When I got back to the hotel, I called the insurance company’s 24-hour customer service hotline to report the accident. We arranged to take the automobile in to a repair shop and the insurance company covered the damage to the vehicle that the other driver caused. Thanks to short-term insurance and the efficiency with which they helped us to have the vehicle repaired, it saved us the hassle and expense of having to sue an uninsured motorist.
